savoring the brief moments

so becky, abby and i went to visit grandma again last night since we were getting reports that she was having periods of greater responsiveness. i expect she's adapting to her pain meds a bit.

she was snoring when we arrived, but woke up soon and did say "hi" to us. we stopped at a road stand garden and brought some gladiolas for her.

mostly she slept, so we talked to her, prayed with her and then we sang on eagles wings and do not be afraid to her. i know it's a bit morbid, but on eagles wings is a song she chose for her funeral and i know i'll be unable to sing it then. but we could sing it yesterday, and it is a comforting song.

in the middle of the visit the phone rang, so i answered it. it was the republican party looking for grandma. after i said she wasn't available to take the call, he said they'd call back. i said that she's 93 and he politely said he'd take her off the call list. i thanked him.

when i hung up grandma was looking at me so i said, "that was the republican party grandma. they want you to vote for john mccain." grandma laughed and that was the highlight of my day to see her smile and laugh.

that's not a political statement, by the way, just a nice example of the sharpness of my grandma to still get a joke.

and i'll forever treasure the moments like that.
