This cooking in is not saving me any money by way of not eating out, btw. To make today's Quiche, I first had to buy a rolling pin and food processor in order to make a pastry. For my first real pastry, it wasn't bad. Even my dad said so, and that man is THE KING of pie crusts. I'm not kidding. He has made the pies for all of the family thanksgivings and Christmas's and Easters for as long as I can remember. Probably before.
But I didn't own my own rolling pin, so I bought a french one. Happily I have a cutting board that I pulled out to make my pastry board, but I've been running to Connie's house every time I've wanted to use a food processor. I figure at this point I a. need my own, and b. don't need to visit Connie's that often. Long, other story.
So, I made quiche and served it with a bottle of Moscato that only I am drinking. Dad said the bacon in the quiche made it a little greasy and he thought ham might be better. Also, my pans were wider than Julia's so the quiche was a little flatter. Maybe the grease would absorb better in a thicker quiche? Maybe I have to buy new pans? My kitchen is not big enough to house all the extra appliances, gadgets and cookware I may need. We shall see...
Looks like http://blogs.salon.com/0001399/2002/08/30.html Potato soup is next. Abby's going to be very excited, but it looks like it's going to require another visit to the kitchen store for a food mill. Sigh.
